UNICOI COUNTY, TN (WJHL) - A Unicoi woman and her grandchild were hit by a car attempting to pass a stopped school bus Thursday on Unicoi Drive.

According to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Katherine Bryant, 47 of Unicoi, and her 6-year-old grandchild were hit by a Kia Sorrento, driven by Kris Ann Waterhouse, 57 of Bakersville, N.C., near 5228 Unicoi Drive.

A Unicoi school bus was reportedly stopped on Unicoi Drive and the 6-year-old started to walk across the northbound lane of the road to get on the bus.

Waterhouse was traveling down Unicoi Drive in her vehicle and failed to stop for bus, which had all of its flashing lights activated, as well as its red stop sign.

Bryant reportedly saw Waterhouse's vehicle not stop for the bus and used her body to protect her grandchild from getting hit.

Both Bryant and her grandchild were taken to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

Waterhouse was charged with one count of passing a school bus and two counts of felony reckless aggravated assault. She was scheduled to appear in court Friday at 9:30 a.m.

A school bus was reportedly not involved in the crash.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
