RALEIGH, N.C. -

Another winter storms hit North Carolina Thursday night and Friday morning, causing thousands of North Carolinians to be without power due to fallen trees and power lines.

Officials of both Duke Power and the state's electric cooperatives hope most power can be restored by later Friday as the storm moves out of the state. Snow, sleet and freezing rain forced many schools to close or delay classes.

Duke Energy says about 300,000 customers were without power at midmorning with the biggest problems around Greensboro, Burlington and Asheboro.

About 50,000 co-op customers are without power largely in the Statesville, Salisbury and Chapel Hill areas.

Orange County officials said Friday there were several locations with downed trees along Highway 70. Orange County declared a State of Emergency because of the winter weather. Orange County officials tweeted that more than 30,000 customers were without power Friday.

The Durham County Sheriff's Office tweeted out as of 10 a.m. Friday morning that deputies have responded to 47 fallen tree reports since 12:30 a.m. Durham residents are urged to call 919-560-4600 or 919-560-0900 to report fallen trees.

At Elon University, near Burlington, fallen tree in the Academic Village caused significant damage to Belk Pavilion.

The forecast calls for as much as 4 inches of snow near Boone with an inch between Winston-Salem and Chapel Hill. Up to an inch of sleet is expected around Hickory with freezing rain in Charlotte.
