WJTV News Channel 12 - RALEIGH: New license will designate NC veterans

New driver's license will designate NC veterans

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Veterans can get a new look for their North Carolina driver's license, with the word "veteran" displayed on the front and back of them.

The new look allows veterans to use their license to get veterans discounts.

They said it's a proud moment for North Carolina.

"We don't have to fight anymore to let anyone know that we are veterans," said Army veteran Lashonda Harris.  "Saying it should be enough, but sometimes that's not enough.  So now that we have our driver's license with seven letters on there, saying we are a veteran, we can be entitled to certain benefits."

Kelly Thomas, commissioner of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, said the new license is convenient and superior to old methods.

"Instead of having to carry multiple identifications with the designation on it, the driver's license which we carry all the time will have the designation on it," he said.  "To date, we've had about 80 vehicle license issued with the veteran's designation.  Those are currently in the mail."

Veterans will need to show their DD-214 discharge form at a driver license office to qualify for the new designation.
