RALEIGH, N.C. -

The Wake County Public School Systems canceled Saturday's scheduled makeup day and SAT tests, but many students didn't find out until they arrived at schools.

Year-round students were scheduled to make up for Tuesday's "snow day," on Saturday, but due to icy roads, the school system decided to cancel the makeup day as well as postpone SAT testing scheduled for the morning.

Wake Schools first made the announcement on its Facebook page at 5:38 a.m., the message was then tweeted at 6:13 a.m., the WCPSS website was updated at 6:24 a.m., and media was alerted around 7:17 a.m.

"WCPSS Transportation officials have driven the roads this morning," the school system wrote. "Based on their observations of icy conditions and a consistent forecast of continued sub-freezing temperatures into the morning, there are serious concerns about the safety of bus and car transportation."

Still, many parents and students didn't get the message in time, instead braving those icy roads that forced the cancellation only to find the doors locked.

"So I get there, and there's a bunch of people standing outside the door, and they're all just waiting around," said student Crystal Gotay. "So I'm thinking, 'OK, so maybe the doors aren't open yet.' And then I walk up and this girl says, 'Oh, SAT's canceled.'"

WCPSS has not announced a rescheduled date for SAT tests.
