HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -
A crew installing fiber optic cable near an Exxon gas station at the intersection of N. Main Street and Holly Springs Road caused a gas leak Wednesday afternoon.
Holly springs spokesperson Mark Andrews said the public is not in danger due to the leak that occurred around 2:20 p.m. Andrews said it is not known if a gas tank or pipe was ruptured at this time.
"The gas station is really old. The tanks have been in the ground for a while so there may have been some miscalculations on the markings and the size of the tank," said Holly Springs Fire Chief Leroy Smith. "That may be attributable to the confusion and exactly how much gas we've lost."
An employee of the gas station said all roads near the leak are blocked off.
A nearby Walgreens and Foot Mart are closed, according to the Town of Holly Springs.
