Durham police arrest 18-year-old in Liberty Street shooting

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham police arrested an 18-year-old Thursday with murder in the shooting death of a man on Liberty Street March 22.

Jermaine Alexander Gibbs was arrested by police on Hicks Street in Durham after noon.

Police found 21-year-old Jeffery Lamar Dawes suffering from a gunshot would at an apartment in the 500 block of Liberty Street around 10:03 p.m. March 22.

Gibbs was charged March 27 with murder in the death of Dawes, police said.

Police said Gibbs and Dawes knew each other and the crime was not random.
