Beyond Breaking Bad: ECU discusses ‘Meth Mouth’

Posted: Updated:
East Carolina’s School of Dental Medicine hosted a workshop for professionals to help educate about treating Methamphetamine users.

ECU faculty taught a group primarily made up of dental professionals and social workers how to recognize, treat and help patients who show signs of substance abuse. The ‘Meth Mouth’ workshop encourages different organizations who interact with substance abusers to work together to provide help and assistance to those addicted.

The faculty hopes to engage the growing presence of meth in Eastern NC.

“Anyone of us can be the point of entry for somebody with the complex issues associated with Meth use, so if we learn from each other as professionals and then be able to establish some networks so we can then not only identify and treat, but then refer to each other with this team based approach” said Dr. Geri Crain of the ECU School of Dental Medicine.

Crain says that integrating dental health, primary care and mental health strategies are key to helping people with substance abuse issues.

Meth is detrimental to user’s teeth and mouth.
