New Bern Shooting: What we know

Posted: Updated:
NEW BERN, N.C. - Investigators haven't released an official report of what happened when the bullets started flying near the Craven Terrace community Friday evening.

What is known is that a foot chase and shootout ended the life of Bryan Stallings as well as Officer Alexander Thalmann and injured Officer Justin Wester of the New Bern Police Department.

After talking to police and people in the area, more details about how this unfolded are surfacing.

"Officer Thalmann stopped a suspicious person walking in the area of Craven Terrace to question him," said Toussaint summers, New Bern Police Department Chief.

That person was 35-year-old Bryan Stallings.

Witnesses tell 9 On Your Side a different story. While they did not want to be identified, witnesses say Thalmann stopped Stallings on Pavie Avenue for not having a flasher on  the back of his bike. Witnesses say when more cops showed up, Stallings, who had been cooperating, took off running.

"The suspect bolted, the officers gave chase and during the course of the chase, the suspect fired upon the officers, injuring the officers,” said Summers. “The officers returned fire, killing the suspect.”

For now, those are the only details police are releasing.

It’s unclear what direction Stallings ran in, but he ended up dead within 100 feet of security cameras. The investigation will show whether or not everything was caught on camera.

Witnesses say Officer Thalmann had already been shot on Oak Street when Officer Justin Wester ran through an alley assisting in the chase. Wester was shot in the leg near a tree stump.

While police say Wester shot Stallings, witnesses say there were two other officers coming from the opposite direction and Stallings was cornered.

Stallings was shot and killed less 130 feet from where Officer Thalmann laid with injuries that led to him passing away on Monday.

As in any shooting that involves a police officer, there are a lot of questions.

The District Attorney's office is working with the SBI to get all the details straight. They should have a full report in at least 2 weeks.
