Craven Terrace no stranger to crime

NEW BERN, N.C. - Craven Terrace is no stranger to crime.

Sitting just along the Neuse River in New Bern, the first phase of Craven Terrace was built in 1940 and the second in 1953.

Numerous murders, shootings, and stabbings have taken place there. That's why police increased patrols.

The Housing Authority Board made it their mission to increase security in the community back when they were appointed in 2012.

It was one of the first things they did. And they say that security is seeing results.

"It's been very effective,” said Julian Marsh, New Bern Housing Authority Executive Director.

Marsh is proud to say In 5 out of the last 15 months, not a single crime was reported. The list includes, but is not limited to robberies, assaults and break-ins.  Marsh says it’s unheard of.

"What we're trying to do is make everyone feel more comfortable,” said Marsh. “The residents, the officers, it's a total effort."

But things have changed. In light of recent events, residents are coming forward and alleging police of racially profiling suspects. They say it's a likely cause of Friday's, case too.

"I know people are being racially profiled,” one anonymous resident said. “This didn't just start, it's been going on."

The man wishing to remain anonymous says he's not against increased patrols, but he wants it done right.

"I'm concerned about everyone that's involved in this because what we look at is the whole community," said Marsh.

9 On Your Side called the NAACP about the issue, which the president, Marshall Williams, says he's heard about before. They're proposing a community forum to talk about the allegations. The Housing Authority agrees.

"I think it is important that people get a chance to talk to each other and hear each other's concerns so we can all move forward,” said Marsh. “It's a tragedy, but the big thing right now is what can we do to make sure this doesn't happen again."

Part of the issues also up for discussion is the trespassing list.

Stallings wasn't on it, but this incident has shed light on the fact that once you get on it, you never come off of it.

The New Bern Police Department wouldn't comment on this at this time, but when they do, 9 On Your Side will have an update.
