Bethel mayor a trailblazer

WASHINGTON, N.C. - A trailblazer takes over the town of Bethel.

Gloristine Brown's the first female and first black mayor for the town.

She was appointed mayor following the abrupt resignation of Mike Whitehurst.

Whitehurst resigned through a letter blasting the Board of Commissioners for its treatment of two town employees including his wife.

Brown says despite the sudden resignation of her predecessor, she's still inspired by his energy for the job.

"I want to be very energetic and hopefully upbeat," Mayor Brown said. "Hopefully help the citizens of Bethel and try to be there for them and do what I can to help them."

Prior to accepting the position, Brown was a member of the Board of Commissioners.
