Funeral home holds public forum on crematoriums

Posted: Updated:
FARMVILLE, N.C. - It's an issue that has some community members in Farmville asking questions, and they’re hoping that a public forum on Thursday will give those answers.

9 On Your Side first told you about the controversy surrounding a crematorium in the town of Farmville last month.

The Farmville Funeral Home is asking the Board of Commissioners to include crematoriums in with zoning for funeral homes.

Representatives from the funeral home say they're not planning to build a crematory right now, yet would like the option to do so at a later time, if they so choose.

While the funeral home says crematoriums pose no threat or harm to the public, some folks in town say they don't want a business like that in the business district.

"There are restaurants in downtown that most people go to, it's going to affect them. Businesses in downtown Farmville, it will affect them and new businesses coming to Farmville,” said resident William East. “I don't feel like downtown Farmville should have something like this in it."

The Board of Commissioners voted to table it until they learn more about the impact it may have in the Central Business District.

Thursday night, the Farmville Funeral Home will host a public forum for community members, directed by an independent moderator. It starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Farmville Community Center.
