RALEIGH, N.C. - After months of financial turmoil and the possibility of a shutdown, Saint Augustine's University President Dianne Boardley Suber announced Friday she would retire at the end of May.

Suber has lead the historically black school for the last 14 years.

"The last several months have been particularly challenging," Suber said in a statement.

Enrollment at St. Aug's has fallen by 27 percent in the past 14 years.

The University blames its $3 million debt on a drop in tuition revenue.

The school is also facing litigation and has furloughed or fired employees.

In 2002, the school was put on probation by the university's accrediting body because of financial discrepancies.

The same body, is once again investigating, and has the power to pull accreditation, which could lead to a loss of funding and an eventual shutdown.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools told WNCN the school has been given until mid-April to show their financials for review.

The school has not said what its plan is for seeking a new leader.

Near campus Friday night, students were reacting to the news.

"The students don't know what to do," said one.

Quanda White-Spencer is one of many alumni saddened by the situation.

She said she wants to see,"Our kids get a better education---and have a better support system and a leader."
