WILSON, N.C. -

Thom Tillis is betting the General Assembly's accomplishments since he became House speaker in 2011 will win him the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in North Carolina.

The Cornelius business consultant has been traveling around the state to GOP functions taking credit for an agenda that's cut tax rates, broadened gun rights and set additional hurdles to abortion. The legislature also put on the ballot a referendum approved by voters in 2012 to put a gay marriage ban in the state constitution.

Tillis is one of eight Republican hopefuls seeking to win the May 6 primary and take on Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan in November. He's widely considered the front-runner but faces criticism from primary rivals and many within the tea party movement.
