Authorities are searching for a 9 year old girl who is believed to have drowned in Yazoo City Sunday
Rescue teams from various areas are searching for a 9-year-old who authorities believe was swept away by flash flood waters. The Yazoo County EMA Director tells News Channel 12 crews are searching culverts. The EMA Director also says the little girl was playing in the backyard when she was swept under. The girl went missing around 8 Sunday night and shortly after someone reported seeing a body in the canal behind the child's house on 8th street and Lee avenue. Yazoo County and Yazoo City fire and police crews responded to the call. A dive crew from Yazoo County was out at the scene and searched the drainage ditches on 8th Street, Lee Avenue, 7th Street, and Martin Luther King Dr. Yazoo County and Yazoo City volunteers were called out to search local drainage ditches. Yazoo County Director of Emergency Management, Joey Ward, says "The rescue phase is now over, we will head into recovery phase in the morning." Ward also says weather played a factor in why it is harder to find the child. The 9- year-old was last seen wearing a pink dress and red tennis shoes.
