KISSIMMEE, FL (WFLA) - A Central Florida woman suffered injuries to her face, legs and torso Saturday during an encounter with a bear near her home in Lake Mary.

Terri Frana, 45, was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

According to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report the incident occurred just before 8 p.m. in the front yard of the victim’s residence. Officers with FWC responded to the scene and are investigating the circumstances.

Several bears were in the area at the time but only one is responsible for the injuries to Frana. The FWC has positioned several traps in the area and is reaching out to residents of this neighborhood to discuss actions they can take to avoid encounters with bears.

The Lake Mary neighborhood where Frana resides is just south of Markham Woods Rd. and approximately two miles west of Interstate 4.

Spring marks the end of the bears’ hibernation period and the FWC reminds residents to be very aware of their surroundings. Children and pets should always be supervised while outdoors to prevent potentially dangerous encounters.

In order to report such incidents call the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922. A search is on for the bear that injured Frana. Officials say the best way to protect residents and their pets is to keep sources of food – such as garbage cans or pet food containers – secure so bears or other wildlife won’t wander into neighborhoods.
