Suspect pleads guilty in 2012 Smithfield apartment shooting

SMITHFIELD, N.C. -

One of three men charged in connection with a September 2012 Smithfield shooting that injured a woman and paralyzed her 8-year-old son pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder last week.

Sameer Edgar, of Detroit, pleaded guilty before a judge in Johnston County Superior Court Thursday April 10. He pleaded guilty to two counts attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and 24 counts of discharging a firearm into occupied property.

Police said Edgar and two others, Mister Height and Cornel Harper, opened fire at the Homewoods Apartment Complex on Towbridge Drive in Smithfield on Sept. 5, 2012.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a woman in her 20's and an 8-yesr-old boy with multiple gunshot wounds.

During Thursday’s hearing, Assistant District Attorney Davis Weddle told the court that the woman was shot in the neck and the boy was shot in several places, including his spinal column.

Superior Court Judge Richard T. Brown sentenced Edgar to up to 19 years in prison.
