Community members snap photos, selfies during General Mills Walking Tour

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

Members of the Johnson City community continue to fight for a city landmark that could be demolished in as little as weeks for a luxury apartment complex.

On Sunday, residents got together for a walking tour of the General Mills building.

The walking tour included tour guides sharing stories about the old mill and how it contributed to daily life in Johnson City.

The mill, which has been a fixture in the downtown area since 1909, was built by George L. Carter as a factory that made flour.

Currently, the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce owns the old building and officials are in the process of selling it.

Organizers of the walk Sunday told News Channel 11 that it’s important to preserve historic landmarks, like the mill, to remind the community of the city’s humble beginnings.

The Facebook page, Southside Neighborhood Organization, has posted numerous pictures and selfies featuring the General Mills building.
