Local runners to participate in the Boston Marathon

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Several runners in the East will make their way up to Boston to run in the first Boston Marathon since the bombings last year.

"We're not going to be deterred from doing what we want to do," said Kirk Jones, a Goldsboro native who will be running the marathon.

Jones says he doesn't know what to expect this year after last year's bombings shook the country.

"I think it's going to be like the airports were after 9/11. A few more hassles but certainly increased security," he said.

Kori Brewer is a Greenville native who will also be taking part in the Boston Marathon. She says the bombings last year were one of things that motivated her to race this year.

"You can't let someone else dictate your horizons," Brewer said. "And that you just have to go on and do what you're going to do."

Thousands of police officers are expected to be present at this year's marathon. For some who live in Boston, they can already see the increased security, especially after police detonated suspicious packages Tuesday night, the one year anniversary of the bombing.

"You do notice the police presence a lot more and something like what happened on Tuesday night with the explosions, that was just a loud noise that probably wouldn't have bothered me before, but it was pretty disturbing," said Caitlin Birch, who lives in Boston and can still recall the events of last year's marathon.

With more than 32,000 runners expected this year, Brewer said she's happy to represent Eastern Carolina.

"In a race that I think is only allowing 36 thousand worldwide to join, I think we'll do Greenville proud," she said.
