3-year-old in state custody, no charges filed after "one-pot" meth labs found

SCOTT COUNTY, VA (WJHL) - Neighbors are still in shock after investigators found several "one-pot" meth labs at a home in Scott County, VA.

During their investigation deputies also found a three-year-old living in the home.

Charlene Caston has lived in Scott County for the past three years. "It's really pleasant, it's beautiful, we've enjoyed living here," she said.

But a little more than a year ago, Caston started noticing things from her neighbors on Yuma Road.

"It smelled like cat urine. There was black sheeting over the front window," Caston said. "There was a lot of vehicles in and out, especially late at night."

Potted plants fill the front yard, but undercover officers received an anonymous tip that illegal activity was going on inside.

"(We) found three old cooks and three gas generators and some of the components to cook meth with. It was a lot for us," said Lt. Chris Holder with the Scott County Sheriff's Office.

"I never expected that that was going on next door," Caston said.

After all the signs, Caston says it all makes sense now.

"I am shocked and I feel almost angry at myself that I didn't put two and two together," she said.

The three-year-old found at the home was taken to a local hospital and is healthy and is now in the custody of the Department of Children's Services.

Though no one has been arrested, at this time, Caston said she feels better about letting her children go out to play.

"I do feel a sense of relief," Caston told News Channel 11.

More than 100 grams of substance is now being sent to the Virginia State Crime Lab for testing.

The two people who will be indicted in front of a Scott County Grand Jury have never been charged before, but now could face several charges including Child Endangerment, Manufacturing Methamphetamine, Conspiracy to Manufacture Methamphetamine and Maintaining a Place of Common Nuisance.
