State Center for Financial Literacy to provide education for public schools

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina Banker’s Association is announcing the creation of the State Center for Financial Literacy Thursday, April 24th.

A press conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Raleigh. State Superintendent June Atkinson and Governor Pat McCrory’s Senior Advisor on Education, Eric Guckian, will participate in the press conference.

The purpose of the center will be to bring key leaders and decision makers together to discuss financial education as related to every North Carolinian, with an initial focus on the state’s public schools.

Last month, U.S. Senator Kay Hagan introduced the Financial Literacy Students Act. The legislation would create incentive grants for states that agree to provide financial literacy education in public elementary and secondary schools.

In a report released this week, North Carolina placed 37th in a ranking of financial literacy in the country.
