Pitt, Greene Counties sustain damage from tornadoes

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -
A massive effort is underway to clean up the mess a tornado left Friday evening in Pitt and Greene counties.

Angel Worthington left her house near Chicod just 15 minutes before it was flipped upside down. "I don't know what made me do it. I mean my husband left right before I did and I was going to sit at my house longer and something just told me, go ahead."

24 hours later Worthington and several others try to salvage what they can from the ruble. Next door, the Browns’ have their work cut out. The house was thrown from its foundation,” Amanda Brown said. "It looked like it was going to take a turn and then it came straight for us. It sounded like can openers ripping the buildings and tractors apart."

The victims say the outpour of support was swift. Communities as far west as Greene County are seeing volunteers by the dozens.

"You think that there are not good people around here and then something happens and you see how many there are. All I can really say is thank you." Worthington said.

"I was without power, still got a house, still stay there, I just got to pick up the pieces and keep on rolling. Woodrow Hulon Jr. said. On Friday he was given a place to stay by the American Red Cross. Hulon’s house is along Speights Bridge Road.

Further south, the same tornado edged the side of the Cunningham’s Purdue Chicken Farm. It left a field of debris.

Kenneth Sutton witnessed the damage and said, “I don't think you get used to storms like this." Reports say several tornados of EF 0 force caused this damage. The Greene County Emergency Management Center reports 17 structures with minor damage and 2 with major damage.
