VANCOUVER, May 2, 2014 /CNW/ - It was with surprise, disappointment and sadness that I learned of the resignation of National Chief Shawn Atleo today. A-in-chut is a respected leader who articulated clear priorities and has a positive vision for First Nations within Canada.

There is no question First Nations are in an important period of transition and moving away from governance under the Indian Act. This work is not easy but progress must and will continue.

Partnership and cooperation between and among First Nations is essential. As is cooperation among Parliament. We need a results driven non-partisan approach to recognition and reconciliation which will ensure, among other things, First Nations control of First Nations education.

On behalf of the British Columbia Assembly of First Nations we thank A-in-chut for his service and for his continued advocacy on behalf of our Peoples.

Respectfully,

BRITISH COLUMBIA ASSEMBLY OF FIRST NATIONS

(signed)

Jody Wilson-Raybould
Regional Chief
