NC Rep Jones faces GOP rival, $1M in outside money

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Eastern North Carolina congressman Walter Jones may be facing the strongest effort to date from his own party members to unseat him.

The 10-term Republican is being challenged by North Carolina native Taylor Griffin, who worked for years in Washington for the government and consulting firms before returning to the state to run. Griffin says Jones' voting record is out of step with conservative values of the region.

Two groups alone have spent more than $1 million combined with television and online ads and voter contact efforts to oppose Jones and support Griffin.

Jones says he's voted his conscience first and is promoting his conservative views on abortion and gun rights.

The primary is Tuesday. "Big Al" Novinec of Jacksonville is the third candidate in the GOP primary.
