Digging into Craven County unemployment number

Posted: Updated:
On the heels of the nation's April's jobs report, 9 On Your Side is looking at the economy in Craven County.

Businesses like “Bear Essentials” in New Bern reflect a state trend of falling unemployment rates.

They're making profits and can now hire more employees helping the county's unemployment rate fall from 9.5 % in March of last year to 7.7% this past March.

This year, between February and March, unemployment numbers actually went up for Craven County.

Larry Parker of North Carolina's Division of Employment Security says that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

"That’s typical when the job market gets better," Parker told 9OYS.  "More people enter the labor force looking for work.”

So if you're applying for a job, you’ll be competing with more people.

If you're already employed you're helping the economy grow and give businesses the resources to hire by spending money.
