CARY, N.C. -

Wake County schools are on the lookout for educators.

The school system held a job fair on Saturday to try and fill the void after hundreds of teachers quit and salaries hit a plateau.

Hundreds of applicants filled the gym at Panther Creek High. The turnout today might surprise some; it's been a tough year for the largest school system in the state.

Last month, officials said 600 teachers quit this school year. One reason for the exodus, North Carolina is 46th in the nation when it comes to teacher pay. But applicants like Sara Snider didn't let the district's past affect the future.

"It's not fair to completely write off the schools and the school system because those kids still need a good education," said Snider.

The school board recently approved a nearly $1.4 billion budget for the coming school year. A total of $35 million of that will go to raises for teachers and staff.

"That's what's bringing a lot of people in today but they really need to take care of the teachers that they have," said Snider. "They've had teachers who've been there for 10 years and haven't gotten a raise and that's not okay."

The school board has also signed off on a $1,500 salary boost for qualified special education teachers and a $1,000 incentive for qualified teachers in math, science, health occupations and family and consumer science. Organizers said this job fair is all about promoting the success and support of the schools.

"While it may not be financial right now, what we are trying to do is make sure that they understand the learning environment they will be in is going to promote their career and allow them to be successful," said Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, Doug Thilman.

Some schools hired teachers at the job fair, while others may not hear for a few weeks if they will have a place in the Wake County school system.
