HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. -
Authorities say they found nine dead dogs on the property of a 40-year-old man who once owned a thriving pet grooming business in Hendersonville.
Jeffrey Landers is charged with nine felony counts of animal cruelty. Investigators say the bodies of the dogs were found decomposing in locked kennels and dog carriers, along with 10 dead birds in a bucket.
Authorities say Landers was already on probation and banned from owning animals from a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge after a horse, donkeys and goats were found in poor condition. His probation officer called police Thursday after seeing animals on his land.
Landers owned the Ivy Gates Pet Grooming business. Authorities say they don't think the dogs belonged to his former clients.
It wasn't known if Landers had a lawyer. (Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.)
