BRANDON, Miss. - Brandon Police are searching for a man spotted with an ax; authorities said the suspect got into an altercation with an officer, injuring him.

Sheriff Bryan Bailey said the cop only had minor injures and is doing fine. The sheriff said the officer stopped because he noticed the subject lurking with an ax in his hand. After the officer tried to question the suspect, that's when the altercation occurred and the man fled the scene.

Police say they are looking for a skinny black male with facial hair. He was wearing blue jeans and holding a white tank top in his hands along with an ax.

The manhunt started near Boyce Thompson Drive off of Highway 18 near Rouse Elementary. The school was on lockdown earlier Monday. Officials said the students have been dismissed but the school is still surrounded by officers because of an after-school program that is currently going on until 6 p.m.

Police are also searching the area near the Windsor Lake community.

Mississippi Highway Patrol, Pearl Police, and the Rankin County Sheriff's Department are also assisting with the manhunt.
