Former Charlotte mayor supports same-sex marriage

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

The former mayor of North Carolina's largest city says he supports same-sex marriage.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in an interview Monday that North Carolina's ban on same-sex marriage was wrong and that he hopes the state gets it right.

While he was Charlotte's mayor, Foxx says he met with members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. But this was the first time he has publicly supported same-sex marriage.

His comments were made on the eve of hearings scheduled in the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Virginia's same-sex marriage ban. It could have an impact in North Carolina because the two states are in the same circuit.

Foxx resigned as Charlotte's mayor last year to become transportation secretary in the Obama administration.
