Genoa Middle School Students Mark End Of Year With Shaving Cream Fight

Posted: Updated:
GENOA TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Enthusiastic 8th-grade students make a beeline from Genoa Middle School Friday afternoon.  Parents awaited the hand off with bags full of shaving cream cans.
Darryl Olenchalk, an uncle to a Genoa Middle School 8th-grader demonstrated how far some of the shaving cream cans can shoot.
One 8th-grader explained, “This is about leaving this school and heading to high school.”
Genoa Middle School student AJ Taylor said, “It’s been going on for a while.  They block off the streets and everything.  We just throw shaving cream in each others’ faces.”

The official end of class at Westerville City Schools is here and parents line the streets to observe the end of the year hoopla.
Genoa Township police control traffic and keep a handle on the event that occurs yearly in the Shellbark Ridge Subdivision.

Officer Sara Rath said, “We provide a presence, bring our cruisers over.  We try to keep the kids out of the street, keep cars away from kids, and help everyone be super hyper aware.”
The 8th-graders are all covered as the shaving cream fight continues for more than 30 minutes.  Kids are caked in the cream as well as the grass.  Excitement spills into neighbors yards on shrubs and lawns.
Officer Rath said, “We discourage that and our residents have been very tolerant, I believe."
