It sounds like the start of an old horror novel: imagine, making your way through thick brush only to find not one, but two heavy caskets.

Their origins unexplained.

Their contents unknown.

That's too creepy to be real, right?

Well, apparently not for Bolton, Mississippi. Jacob Kittilstad takes the lid off this thriller this MYSTERY MONDAY.

A vault sometimes holds secrets. Other times it is the secret.

Neighbors say two twin concrete caskets have rested in the brush for more than a decade. They're less than 10 yards off Carol Johns Road but - driving by - you might not see them.

"It's weird to me because, as I say, if something happen around i usually know about it," Dan Mashburn said.

"I don't know about that," Mashburn said.

People call Dan Mashburn an oldtimer. A talker. A story-teller historian.

"You could go down and ask Doug about it. Doug Beard," Mashburn recommended.

...but even fellow 'lifers' in Bolton...

"You know, everybody knows everybody in this small Mississippi towns. Knows everybody's business so there's no need to try," Doug Beard said.

...say they can only speculate why these coffins, each weighing more than a car, have creating a slapdash cemetery just outside the ditch.

"They coulda pre-bought the things thinking that the family would use 'em and then maybe something happened to them. Or maybe they hadn't died or hadn't needed 'em. I don't know," Beard said.

"I don't have a, I don't have a casket no where. But I have heard of people who did. But I don't have one," Mashburn said with a laugh.

J.C. Campbell - a neighbor - says it's simple. And the secret is: there is no real secret.

...at least NOW after the death of his neighbor: a classic car owner, a business woman, and a so-called bootleg operator named of Sadie Price.

"She served food and liquor and beer. She had a club," Campbell said.

"All I know just by looking at [the caskets] they look like they're like eight, nine feet long," Campbell said.

"And they're real heavy. Now see, them guys brought 'em down here. They put 'em on a trailer and brought them down there to keep people from going in there. But the people were still going in there," Campbell said.

"And [the thieves] moved 'em to the side so they could go in and out of there," Campbell said.

"The caskets were across the driveway. They put 'em across the driveway. They figured they couldn't move 'em cause they heavy, I reckon. And they took the wrecker and moved 'em and went on up there and got the cars," Campbell said.

The "cafe" is now slumped over. There's no sign of her classic cars...

"That was true about the stealing cars. I can remember that," Beard said.

...neighbors say the thiefs were never arrested and both suspects have long passed.

The only real evidence of the scheme are two vaults that are still pulled away from each other. And pushed back from the collective memory.

"It's kind of news to me. I'm kind of wondering about it. And I've been around here all this time and travel that road a good bit," Mashburn said.

Among the vehicles that went missing despite the casket-blockage: old Ford and Chevrolet trucks including a nice red '63 model Chevy that one neighbor tells us he saw get towed away...

...never to be seen again.
