Rating Recent Weather Anomalies

CENTRAL OHIO - We're not even halfway through the year, but Storm Team 4's Ben Gelber says we've never seen so many uncommon or rare weather anomalies in such a short period of time. We want to know your "favorite" of the rarities. Read about them, check out the slideshow above and then answer the poll below!

Spring Thunderstorms

We have seen a wide variety of unusual and visually spectacular clouds formations in the past few weeks—clouds that we see maybe once every five or 10 years—that each have a special beauty.  On successive Wednesday evenings, we were treated to relatively rare roll and mammatus clouds, associated with turbulence from distant thunderstorm complexes.  We also had an interesting cloud that looked like a storm with a curtain—a tail cloud.

Spring Planets

Astronomy classes at Hilliard Darby and Hilliard Davidson caught these great shots of Saturn and Jupiter on a recent clear night that fell into a broad, unusual alignment with Mars and the moon.

Spring Lightning

The light shows associated with thunderstorms have been dramatic, but usually are not so well-connected between clouds as this cloud-to-cloud pattern of multiple strokes.

Winter Tornado Radar Image

A rare wintertime hook echo showed up on Live VIPIR radar imagery just before a brief and equally rare February tornado touched down five miles east of Delaware.

Winter Snow Rollers

That came on the heels of our historic blast from the north—the a polar vortex—coupled with a dozen snowstorms that compacted in a windy early morning to present these gorgeous and stunning snow rollers, something we rarely if ever witness in Ohio.

Spring Funnels

Pike County funnel cloud that narrowly missed qualifying as a tornado (May 14), despite appearances, because it hovered just above the ground, but is one of the best funnel cloud shots I’ve seen in years.
