JACKSON, Miss. - Supervisor Robert Graham and other Hinds County Board members presented Jackson Police Officer James Edwards with the Hinds County “Above and Beyond” Award for his bravery and valor demonstrated during a recent apartment fire in Jackson where several children and their parents were rescued.
Jackson Patrolman James Edwards was driving near the Melrose Place Apartments the morning of May 16 when he noticed smoke and a man waving him down from his balcony. The family was trapped, Edwards was alone and had to act fast.
Edwards told us in an interview that day, he advised the man on the balcony to lower the kids down to him one by one.
The JPD officer rescued seven children and four adults before the Jackson Fire Department arrived.
One woman died at a local hospital from her injuries.
"Once again, it's part of the job," Edwards said. "You never know what's going to happen day to day. It's part of serving and protecting."
