Southwest Airlines to Leave the Jackson Area

Mississippi’s gateway to the world is now losing Southwest Airlines as one of its four airlines at the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport.

"We no longer fit in their business model so they decided it was time for them to leave this market," says Gene Moore, director of communications.

However, this isn't the only market the major airline is pulling its wings from.

"They also pulled out of Branson, Missouri and Key West, Florida," explains Moore.

After Southwest’s last take off on Saturday, this international airport will be down to three airlines.

"We have Delta, we have United and we have American," Moore says.

Moore tells News Channel 12, the airline leaving won't have a negative impact on the airport.

"With Southwest leaving, it presents opportunity for our other airline partners," Moore says.

Moore says these opportunities mean more flights, more seats added to certain planes and better customer service.

The customers we spoke with, however, aren't satisfied with the airline leaving this airport.

"I'm very disappointed. I actually moved here and lived in Baltimore and came to Jackson and was excited first they took away my nonstop and now their leaving," says Justin Jones-Fosu, passenger.

As for the future of the airport, Moore says the airport is actively searching for more airlines.

Southwest Airlines has its final boarding at the Jackson International Airport Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

It’s a one way departure from Jackson to Houston.

According to Moore, ticket prices for flights shouldn't change dramatically, if prices even change at all.
