New quarter honors "red rock wonderland" Arches National Park

MOAB, Utah, June 6, 2014 The United States Mint today launched the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program coin honoring Arches National Park in Utah.

The coin's reverse (tails) design depicts Delicate Arch, a 65-foot freestanding natural arch, which is a widely recognizable landmark in Utah and the most famous arch found in the park.  The quarter is the 23rd coin in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, the bureau's multi-year initiative to honor 56 national parks and other national sites in each state, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories.

The 76,679-acre park's unique landscape, which includes over 2,000 natural stone arches, served as the backdrop for the event that took place near the visitor center.

"Having lived in Utah, I know from first-hand experience that Delicate Arch in Arches National Park is one of the Earth's very special geologic wonders and why it was chosen as the design for Utah's America the Beautiful Quarter," said United States Mint Deputy Director Richard A. Peterson during the ceremony.

Guest speakers included Spencer J. Cox, lieutenant governor of Utah; Dave Sakrison, mayor of Moab and master of ceremonies for the event; and Kate Cannon, Arches park superintendent.  Those in attendance were among the first in the nation to get the new quarter at the coin exchange, which followed the ceremony.  The Federal Reserve will officially release millions of Arches National Park quarters into circulation June 9.

The United States Mint will offer collectible bags and rolls of Arches National Park quarters from its facilities in Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco beginning June 9 at noon Eastern Daylight Time.  Orders will be accepted at the bureau's online catalog at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog and at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).  Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order by calling 1-888-321-MINT (6468).

The United States Mint is administering the America the Beautiful Quarters Program in accordance with Public Law 110-456, the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008.  Each year until 2020, five new quarters will be released with reverse designs representing select national sites.  The final coin in the program will be released in 2021.  The quarters are being issued based on the order in which the sites were established.
