Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Police have identified the suspect who they say robbed the Walmart on Greenville Boulevard Friday afternoon.

He's identified as 23-year-old Anthony Velasco, a validated Sureno-13 (SUR-13) gang member.  Police say he's facing several charges including First Degree Burglary and 2 count of Assault by point a gun. He's got a total bond of $1,200,000.

Police spokeswoman Kristen Hunter tells 9 On Your Side Velasco robbed the money center at the front of the store around 1:20 p.m. He then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Witnesses provided police with a description of Velasco, the stolen car he was operating and its license plate number. Police were able to quickly track him down and attempted to pull his car over, but he sped off.

Hunter says officers followed the car to County Home Road where it eventually ran into a cement sewer line on the side of the road and caught fire. Velasco was uninjured, checked out by EMS, and taken into custody.

Walmart spokeswoman Dianne Gee told 9 On Your Side they take crime seriously but it happens in every community.  Gee says they are committed to providing a safe shopping and working environment and praise shoppers and employees for helping the police today.
