ABC Commission suspends Club Bodi's alcohol license

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The alcohol permits of a Raleigh private club have been suspended, the North Carolina ABC commission ruled Friday afternoon.

The ABC commission said the move was made against Club Bodi after shots were fired in the club and a fleeing patron was shot to death about a block away on June 1.

Bodi, at 310 S. West Street, has had permits since August 2011, the ABC commission said. The ABC commission said the summary suspension is immediate.

“The ABC Commission will not tolerate deadly violence at locations that hold permits to sell alcohol,” said Commission chairman Jim Gardner.

According to a Raleigh Police report, Vernon Oneal Jones Jr. was inside Club Bodi minutes before he died. The report said shots were fired inside Club Bodi, and many people left shortly after the shots were fired.

Minutes later, the police said, Jones died from gunshot wounds in a nearby parking lot.

Lt. Brian Limper of the Raleigh Police wrote in a report, “I feel continued operation of this business will result in injuries and/or death of patrons, staff, and/or law enforcement personnel.”

He said the continued operation of the club put a strain on the Raleigh police and other law enforcement officials.

"No one was shot or injured inside Club Bodi last night," the club posted after the shooting on Facebook. "The loud pop that was heard was due to a faulty piece of the club's internal sound equipment."

In August 2013, two people were shot at Club Bodi. Michael Adolphe Cadet was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and assault with a deadly weapon serious injury in connection with those shootings.

The club, however, said shootings at the club are "extremely rare."
