Thomas Walker High School students defy ACLU, include Christian song and prayer in graduation

Ewing, VA (WJHL) - Students at Thomas Walker High School added a Christian song and prayer to the high school graduation ceremony Friday night, despite a warning from the American Civil Liberties Union.

Saturday night, graduating seniors at the Lee County, Virginia school included The Lord's Prayer and a Christian song into the graduation ceremony which did not include any religious references in the actual program.

Last week, the American Civil Liberties Union warned the school that it's traditional inclusion of the song "Till We Meet at Jesus' Feet" in the graduation ceremony was a violation of the Constitution.

The ACLU also warned against the display of The Ten Commandments in Thomas Walker High School.

In response to the ACLU letter, Lee County School leaders took down The Ten Commandments.   Students responded by displaying individual copies in their lockers, permissible because it's considered personal property.

"Till We Meet at Jesus' Feet" was removed from the graduation program, the first time that's happened in school history.

On Wednesday, a large group held a rally outside the school in support of the religious display and song.

Friday night, one student diverted from the program during the graduation and prayed "The Lord's Prayer."   Much of the audience including students, staff, faculty, and family members joined in.

At the end of the graduation ceremony, students once again went off-program and sang the song "God Be With You Till We Meet Again."   That caused the auditorium to erupt in applause.

The actions of Thomas Walker graduates likely can't be considered a Constitutional violation because school administration didn't condone the inclusion of the Christian song and prayer by planning for it in the graduation order of service.
