A retired Jackson police officer is dead after he collided his motorcycle with a van Saturday afternoon.

It happened before 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon on Highway 22 just east of I-20 in Edwards.

According to Trooper Eric Henry, 49- year-old Richard Polk, formerly with JPD, was traveling westbound on his Honda motorcycle.

70- year -old Doris Stamps was traveling in a van eastbound on Highway 22 when she made a left turn into a church parking lot.

That was when Polk struck the passenger side of the van.

Polk died on the scene, according to Trooper Henry.

His passenger 57-year-old Della Brumfield was transported to UMC with non-life threatening injuries.

Stamps was transported to Baptist hospital also with non-life threatening injuries.
Trooper Henry says from the investigation so far, they can tell Polk tried to avoid hitting the van since there were skid marks on the road.

The accident is under investigation.
