FLOWOOD, Miss. - "You don't expect it to happen, suddenly like that you know. it was kind of a shock, little bit of disbelief," Jerry Faulkner says he couldn't believe it when he heard the news that his father, 60-year-old, Joe Don Faulkner was struck by a vehicle while he was crossing Spillway Road, Friday.
"They said he was holding a fishing pole in his hand," says Jerry. Even though he and his father lost touch over the years he still has fond memories of his dad growing up. "When we were kids he was always taking us fishing hunting, we rode horses very outdoorsy," says Jerry.
His son says Joe Don battled addiction but turned his life around, working with Mercy House Ministries in Georgetown. "He was helping other people through addiction and stuff, something that he suffered from himself, so he was trying to help other people," says Jerry.
Faulkner was declared dead on the scene with major trauma to his head and body, the accident is under investigation.
