"It's just not going to be the same anymore."

Life has changed for Tiffany Ashley and her family since losing her father, Richard Polk in a motorcycle accident Saturday.

Polk collided with a van while riding in Edwards with his partner of 13 years, Della Brumfield.

Polk retired from the Jackson Police Department last year and family members say he continued to protect and serve until the end.

"He made that ultimate sacrifice for my mom." says Byron Brumfield, Polk's stepson

Della Brumfield suffered severe road rash and a knee injury.

She is being treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center or her injuries.

"At impact, witnesses tell us he just pushed the motorcycle in front of him. He threw my mom off the back of the motorcycle and that's what saved her life." says Byron Brumfield

Family and friends say Polk wouldn't have it any other way, they're left holding on to the final moments they shared with him.

"The last thing I said was 'hey, I will see you later.' That was our last thing, so that's something I got to be able to remember him by with just how pleasant he was on Saturday morning." says officer Eric Wall, Polk's former colleague and friend

Polk's youngest daughter, Tiffany says she and her father were very close.

She says it will be hard dealing with the loss especially during their favorite time of year.

"Next Sunday is Father's Day and Saturday is my birthday and now he's not going to be here. It's not going to be the same."

The driver of the van was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
