Following a Friday afternoon chase, the Mississippi Highway Patrol takes 200 lbs. of marijuana off the streets in Jefferson Davis County.
Trooper Eric Henry with the Mississippi Highway Patrol tells us the chase began around 3:30 Friday afternoon at a road block on Highway 541 in Simpson County.
According to Trooper Henry, two men in a Mercedes pulled up to the road block. That’s when authorities smelled marijuana. Captain Steven Shows asked the men to pull over to the side of the road. The driver complied with the request, but as authorities approached the vehicle, they sped off.
The driver led troopers on a nearly 20-mile chase into Jefferson Davis County. Trooper Henry tells us the driver of the Mercedes wrecked the car near North Carson Road. The suspects got out of the car and ran.
We’re told Captain Shows, with the assistance of the Jefferson Davis Sheriff’s Office and troopers, caught the suspects.
Both suspects are being held at the Jefferson County Jail. Neither of the men had identification. Authorities are working to confirm their identities.
For now, both men are facing charges of DUI, possession with intent to distribute and felony fleeing.
