NEW BERN, N.C. -
District Attorney Scott Thomas says “no criminal charges” will be filed in the death of 15-year-old Tanner Webb.
Webb was found dead following a boating accident on the Trent River.

Thomas says four teenage males including Webb boarded and departed on a 22-foot boat on the afternoon of June 2nd. The passengers on the boat say Webb fell from the bow of the boat after sitting there for approximately two minutes. It is unknown what caused Tanner to fall. One passenger told authorities they may have crossed a small amount of wake just prior to the fall.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission and District Attorney determined that Webb’s fall was in no way associated with any careless or reckless conduct of the boat operator or other passengers.

They also found that there were neither drugs nor alcohol involved.

Investigators also say, “The operator of the boat was 15 years and 9 months old, and, in July, 2011, had successfully passed a National Association of Safe Boating Laws Administrators (NASBLA) boating safety course.  Pursuant to North Carolina boating law, passage of that course allowed him to operate the vessel, regardless of his age or the age of any of his passengers.”
