JACKSON, Miss. - The following news release is from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety:

During its first flight searching for marijuana crops, the Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) new helicopter had success in Tchula. Eleven pot plants were seized about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. MHP working with Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics agents are investigating. The plants have a total street value of approximately $11,000.

DPS is utilizing a federal grant to pay for fuel and routine helicopter maintenance. This year, DPS got nearly $50,000 for aerial marijuana eradication.

Last week, DPS took delivery of a new Airbus AS350B3e helicopter. Already the new aircraft is having a positive impact.

“We’ve had this helicopter eight days and it’s already proving its law enforcement value,” Public Safety Commissioner Albert Santa Cruz said. “It was the first time our pilots used the helicopter on an eradication mission and they got dope off the streets.”
