NC House moving Medicaid changes along

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The North Carolina House has a plan to overhaul the state Medicaid system it hopes will win over the Senate before the legislature adjourns for the year.

The House Appropriations Committee scheduled a debate and vote Wednesday on a measure that would shift the risk of Medicaid patient costs to hospital and physician networks. Medical providers would receive a fixed amount of money for each patient they treat, rather than the conventional fees they receive for each service performed.

Gov. Pat McCrory's administration backs the idea, which cleared another House committee late last month. Senate Republicans say it's better than the original McCrory plan but have said they want the state Medicaid office out of the Department of Health and Human Services.
