NC lawmakers scaling back for July 4, budget talks

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The North Carolina General Assembly is scaling back its regular business schedule due to the July 4 holiday and the ongoing budget talks.

House Speaker Thom Tillis said late Wednesday that his chamber would meet Thursday morning to take a final vote on its coal ash cleanup bill before adjourning for the week. But he said the House would not take votes next week on the floor to give its budget negotiators time to work with their Senate counterparts. That means other House members could stay home until the following week.

The Senate already adjourned for the July 4 weekend after its Wednesday afternoon session and didn't plan to hold a regular floor session until early next week.
