Texas Tech Transfer Ready to Compete For QB Job

Posted: Updated:

Blacksburg (WSLS)  He was coached by current Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris in high school--back in Texas.  He was a highly touted recruit out of Lake Travis HS.

But two seasons at Texas Tech--included just 58 pass attempts, and no light at the end of the tunnel.   So quarterback Michael Brewer became a Hokie this summer. He has been getting a crash course in Virginia Tech football all summer long--including the allowed short meetings with offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler, and voluntary work with the wideouts. Now, the battle to become Logan Thomas's successor has begun.

Brewer, for his part, says the competition will only make the whole team better--no matter the position. He talked about Blacksburg--and his new Hokie teammates with glowing terms.

The incumbent is Mark Leal, Logan's backup last year and a 5th year senior. Also impressive in the spring, local product Brenden Motley, who stands 6-4 and has the mobility that will bring back memories of Hokie quarterbacks in years past.

The Christiansburg product took his team to the VHSL 4A title game his senior season, and also won a VHSL state basketball championship. The depth chart to open the fall had Leal and Motley co-number ones, with Brewer listed as second string.

Brewer explained that the air-raid offense was different than the Hokies scheme, and he's busy learning the little things--like checks under center at the line--that were not an issue out in West Texas. That said, he explained that there are only so many places players can go on the field, so although its new he's probably seen it or done it already at some point. He pointed to his experience around football--on and off the field--as something that will make this type of competition easier for him.

Virginia Tech's media day/fan appreciation day is slated for Saturday August 9th. The Hokies have a pair of scrimmages on the calendar but both are closed to the media and public.
