Pitt County Sheriff’s summer camp celebrates last day

Posted: Updated:
Campers were recognized for their participation by Sheriff Neil Elks.

A group of campers finished their camp with the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office this morning. Pizza and snow cones were part of the celebration at the Grifton School.

Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks spoke to group and recognized each of the participants with a certificate.

Sergeant Cam Coburn with the Sheriff Office’s ‘Community Impact Division’ says the program helps build a bridge between law enforcement and the community. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We want to make a positive impact so these folks may want to possibly be in law enforcement, or at least their views of law enforcement will be shaped in a positive way” said Coburn.

Students took field trips throughout the summer to different community organizations and the Pitt County Courthouse. Participants also learned about gun safety and when to talk to a police officer.

Coburn tells 9 On Your Side “The goal is for them to see law enforcement as more than just the enforcers but also as role models and character builders.”
