Community Health Systems - which operates a dozen Mississippi hospitals - announced Monday that information on 4.5 million patient had been stolen in a data breach.
According to the Community Health System website, the company owns, leases, or operates 206 hospitals in 29 states.
In a statement from the company, officials said that no medical or credit card information was taken in the attack.
Community Health Systems says the attack may have happened between April and June. In a statement, the company said the attack bypassed its security systems to take patient names, addresses, birth dates, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers.
The information that was taken came from patients who received care from doctors tied to the company within the past five years.
Community Health has since removed the malware from its system and has taken precautions to prevent any future attacks, according to a statement.
Community Health Systems also getting in touch with patients affected by the attack and offering them I.D. theft protection services.
