Hospital network hack affects millions

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Hackers accessed personal information for 4.5 million patients of a large hospital chain with more than a half dozen sites in the Tampa Bay area.

Community Health Systems reported Monday that a group originating in China used "highly sophisticated malware and technology" to access the information, including names, dates of birth, social security numbers and addresses of patients.

The breach is believed to have happened between April and June 2014.

But anyone who received treatment from a network-owned hospital in the last five years is affected, the company reported.

Community Health Systems hospitals in the Tampa Bay area include Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, Bartow Regional Medical Center, Bayfront Health in Spring Hill and Venice Regional Bayfront Health.

The organization operates 206 hospitals in 29 states across the country.

A spokesperson for Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg said the site had not yet been informed of whether any patients from that location were affected. The company said in its filing that it will notify affected patients and regulatory agencies, and provide identity theft protection services to those whose information was compromised.
