BEDFORD (WSLS) – School leaders are faced with several tough decisions over the next few weeks in Bedford County.

Thursday night, the Bedford County School Board discussed the possibility of closing down another elementary school.

This comes just after the decision was made to close Body Camp Elementary school when an efficiency study showed that the school board could save more than $1 million if they closed down two schools.

The school board approved the closing of Body Camp Elementary in 2015, and now a decision a waits on the future of both Bedford Primary and Thaxton Elementary schools.

Chair of the Board, Gary Hostutler says it's a tough decision that the board is forced to make, especially when the schools are only at 60 to 70 percent of their capacity.

He says, either way, both schools are closely tied to the community, but a decision has to be made.

“We have to look at the big picture that these smaller schools are very inefficient to operate. We've had declining enrollment, particularly in the liberty zone over the past few years. It's just not financially feasible to continue to maintain five elementary schools in that zone when they are each running sixty to seventy percent capacity,” Hostutler said.

The board will tour both elementary schools on Thursday night in order to make a better basement of which school should be closed down.
